Why learn Spanish?
That alone is reason enough. Most Europeans speak at least two languages. In the US it's rare. Americans realize we can no longer afford to be so oblivious, nor do we want to. I meet many young American travelers to Guatemala and on the whole their Spanish is not bad – it's not up to European standards, but it's getting there. Without a doubt their Spanish is much better than the Spanish my generation spoke. I am impressed. In our defence, only in the last two or three decades has Spanish become our "second language". We know we can't continue to expect everyone on the planet to speak English and many of us want to learn another language – in particular Spanish. The need to learn Spanish is obvious, but it is also a pleasure. It requires some effort, but what's the reward in doing something easy? I learned the language ...and so can you. |
